
MADURAI: The advantages of going for rooftop solar installation under the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana were highlighted at a public awareness program conducted in Madurai today-September 17th 2025- by the Women Consumer Protection Association.
Various stakeholders including solar installers, banks, consumers and connecting DISCOMS had participated in this meeting where the benefits and subsidies available for rooftop solar were explained in detail through special sessions on how households can avail government subsidies by installing solar panels.
C.Packialakshmi, founder and managing director, Women Consumer Protection Association, has said that the objective of organizing the solar stakeholders’ meeting in Madurai is to create a larger awareness about the PM Scheme for rooftop solar.
A senior bank official from the Union Bank of India has said that the rooftop solar scheme for domestic households was launched by the central government in February 2024 and banks are providing full support for those who want to go solar.
“It is a residential advantage scheme that comes with subsidy from MNRE. It is time to tap the Sun to the fullest extent possible to meet our electricity requirements at home. By installing rooftop solar panels, you can save the pocket. You can avail bank loan for this and no income proof is required for up to Rs.2 lakhs. There are solar vendors to guide you about bank eligibility etc. For example, in Union Bank, we have digital solar loan which sanctions the loan amount within two days with easy process. Collateral security is not required for rooftop solar and we have Union Rooftop Solar from our bank to provide loan at low interest rate,” the Union Bank of India official has said.
Mr.Vishnu Mohan Rao, Programme Lead, CAG, Er.R.Regina Rajakumari, Supertintending Engineer-Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited-Madurai, Mrs.V.Meenakshi from State Bank of India and Mrs.Jeyasudha, senior manager-zonal office, Indian Bank, were among those invited to address the participants.
Three solar installers- Mr.S.Selvakumar, Mr.Siva and and Mr.Thiribhuvanam- had given specific information about the PM rooftop solar scheme and answer public queries.
“We want to promote awareness about solar energy schemes available which are very beneficial for households and residential needs. The PM Surya Ghar Scheme is a time-bound user friendly scheme. If you see the JanSamarth portal, you will get a comprehensive idea about government schemes, subsidies and loans,” solar installer Mr.S.Selvakumar has said today.
