NHRC issues notices to Railway Board Chairman, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and DGP on Cuddalore train collision with school van at level crossing

MADURAI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Chairman of Railway Board in the Ministry of Railways and also to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Tamil Nadu asking them for a detailed report on the tragic incident of train collision with a school van in Cuddalore district on July 8th 2025 in which two children died and several children had sustained injuries.

“The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that a passenger train had collided with a school van in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. Reportedly, the gate at level crossing was open and a train had passed when this incident occurred because the train collided with school van. NHRC has observed that this incident, if true, raises serious issues of violations of human rights. So, notices were issued to Railway Board Chairman and also to Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and DGP calling for a detailed report on this matter within two weeks, and also about the present health status of persons who sustained injuries in the incident,” according to a press release from NHRC today-July 17th 2025.

The press release had pointed out citing next day media reports that an underpass has been sanctioned by the Southern Railway in the place of that level crossing in Cuddalore district but permission for it has not been given by the District Collector for the last one year.
