
MADURAI: Dr.P.Varalakshmi, associate professor in Department of Molecular Microbiology of School of Biotechnology, Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) here has been selected for the Tamil Nadu Scientist Award (TANSA) 2023 by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology in the discipline of biological sciences.
She has filed four patents of which two have been granted and her research has received 2,623 citations with H-index of 29 and an i10-index of 69, according to a press release received from the university here today-June 5th 2025.
Dr.Varalakshmi Perumal has published 110 research articles including review papers and book chapters in reputed national and international publications. Her primary research interests focus on exploring algal metabolites for therapeutic and bio-energy applications.
She has secured research funding of more than Rs.10 crores from various agencies and has completed several major projects funded by the Government of India, the press release said and further informed that Dr.Varalakshmi’s research thrust at MKU here for the past one decade has been on ‘unveiling bioactive metabolites of under explored algae and their associated bacteria from the coastal regions of south India.
The TANSA awardees list covered various science disciplines including agricultural sciences, biological sciences, chemical sciences, environmental sciences, engineering and technology, mathematical sciences, medical sciences, physical sciences, social sciences and veterinary sciences.
