MADURAI: A fervent request was made to the Chief Minister Mr.M.K.Stalin to declare Madurai as the second capital of Tamil Nadu because Chennai has become very congested and also it is far away for people of southern districts from the distance point of view.

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry here has made this request through a memorandum to the Chief Minister who was in Madurai today-June 1st 2025.

“Madurai should be declared as second capital because of increasing issues such as population and traffic congestion in Chennai. Our chamber has consistently emphasised the urgent need to make Madurai as the second capital,” Dr.N.Jegatheesan, TN Chamber president, had urged in the memorandum which also appealed that the next global investors meet which will be organized by the State government should be conducted in Madurai in January 2026.

Giving reasons on why Madurai has to be declared as the second capital of Tamil Nadu, he said that currently all government department offices are located only in Chennai and even to start a small business, the entrepreneurs have to travel to Chennai to meet the department officials and obtain necessary approvals.

“Kanyakumari is about 800 kms away from Chennai, causing significant costs and time delays. MSMEs find it very hard and thereby resulting in southern region lagging behind in industrial development. Other States such as Karnataka, Maharashtra etc have second capitals while important government offices in Kerala are at Ernakulam,” the chamber had pointed out.

Dr.N.Jegatheesan has said that if Madurai is made as second capital, then it will lead to efficient administration and offices can be relocated here.

“Currently, about 42 government departments and 75 commissioner / director offices operate in Chennai. So, we are making this request to the Chief Minister. If some government offices are shifted to Madurai, it would gradually open up substantial opportunities for the development of southern districts,” the TN Chamber has said today.
