MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association from Madurai has supported the ‘One Nation One Election’ proposal by saying that it will be good if Lok Sabha, Assembly and local body elections are held simultaneously at the same time across the country.

A letter to this effect was sent yesterday to the Chairman of High Level Committee and former President of India Mr.Ramnath Kovind.

“At present, three elections are conducted in our country, one for Lok Sabha at the Centre and legislative assembly elections for States and there are polls for local bodies. Also, we have by-elections if the candidate is disqualified or passes away. For these three elections, there is electoral code of conduct three times and hence it affects the trade and business of our country,” the association has said in its suggestion feedback letter sent to the committee chairman Mr.Ramnath Kovind on February 2nd 2024.

The letter, which was signed by the Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association president Mr.S.V.S.S.Velshankar, honorary secretary Mr.S.Sai Subramaniam and honorary advisor S.P.Jeyapragasam, has cited other reasons too for supporting the One Nation One Election proposal.

“If all the elections for Centre, States and local bodies are held simultaneously at a time, the government expenditure can be brought down and government holidays too will be reduced. Elections conducted in various phases and due to election code of conduct, the businessmen, traders and industrialists are immensely affected for travelling with cash meant for business purposes. Hence, we request your good self to consider conducting Lok Sabha, Assembly and local body elections at the same time,” they said in the letter to the chairman of high level committee.
