Is MKU missing UGC rules on Ph.D guideship? Objections on university Registrar’s circular, all set for Academic Council meeting on 21st March

MADURAI: Several experienced faculty members of affiliated colleges of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) in Madurai and senior academicians in Tamil Nadu have today expressed their concerns and apprehensions objecting to the easy approval of Ph.D. Guideship given to teachers working under self-finance stream in aided and self-finance colleges affiliated to MKU with easy guidelines that are not in sync with UGC rules.

The MKU Registrar in-charge Dr.K.Sadasivam had sent a circular dated 14th March 2023 to the Principals of all affiliated colleges and to the Directors of approved research centres.

Speaking to ‘LotusTimes’ media website in Madurai on March 17th 2023, a few senior professors in MKU and many senior faculty of affiliated colleges in Madurai region have questioned on why the university Registrar in-charge Dr.K.Sadasivam had urgently sent a circular dated 14th March 2023 to the Chairpersons of Schools of MKU, to the Principals of affiliated colleges and to the Directors of approved research centres even before the MKU Academic Council meeting scheduled to take place on March 21st 2023 and the Senate meeting to take place later.

Some of the points being objected in the MKU Registrar’s circular are about the missing of UGC guideline of regular faculty, salary criteria and undertaking to be given.

“Is the university ignoring Academic Council members? When the Ph.D guidelines framed to offer guideship/ allocation of Research Supervisor etc is coming for discussion in the Academic Council meeting and when it is there in the agenda, what is the hurry to issue a circular now based on a decision taken in the Syndicate earlier. Now we have new Syndicate members and members in Academic Council/ committees. If the decision is sent to colleges, then why this issue should be there on Academic Council agenda for discussion? We appeal to the university to be very careful with Ph.D issues and all doctorate degree matters because Ph.D should have its value forever. So, we want the Academic Council members of MKU to raise this issue, fully discuss and then take a decision. We are not objecting anything, but don’t make Ph.D guideship of MKU easier than a LKG teacher,” a few senior professors have said in Madurai today.
