MADURAI: Powerful civil society organization People’s Watch in Madurai had today demanded that appropriate legal and Constitutional action must be taken against the four MLAs who had resigned recently and joined another political party just within few days of 2026 assembly elections and results in the State.
“Within just two weeks after the assembly elections results were declared on May 4th 2026, it was a shock that four elected MLAs of the assembly have resigned without giving any genuine or convincing reason. It appears that their resignations were politically motivated and are intended to indirectly support the present government in Tamil Nadu for personal or political gains. So, we demand an appropriate legal and Constitutional action on these four MLAs who resigned recently within days of assembly election,” Mr.R.Sathiamoorthy, Executive Trustee, Centre for Promotion of Social Concerns, has said in a press release issued from Madurai today-May 28th 2026 without mentioning the name of any political party in his press statement.
Charging that the people and voters of Tamil Nadu were taken for a ride by these four MLAs with thier resignation, the People’s Watch which works as a human rights monitoring network has said that these MLAs must be made accountable for the unnecessary financial burden caused to the public exchequer with their resignation and for disregarding the democratic mandate of the voters within just few days of the assembly election that took place in Tamil Nadu.
WASTE OF PUBLIC MONEY:
“During the assembly election, enormous public money was spent for conducting the poll by the Election Commission and it is said to be Rs.4 crores per assembly constituency. If elected MLAs are permitted to resign immediately after getting elected without any valid reason, it would amount to a waste of taxpayers’ money and betrayal of public trust. So, we want the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker to hold a proper enquiry into the resignation of these 4 MLAs and uphold the Constitutional morality,” the People’s Watch had demanded from Madurai today.
Mr.R.Sathiamoorthy, Executive Trustee, Centre for Promotion of Social Concerns, had pointed out that such resignations cannot be treated as a simple personal choice even though it is a Constitutional right to resign.
“The assembly Speaker must do an enquiry to find out whether the resignation of MLAs is voluntary and genuine. The surrounding political circumstances must be fully probed by the Speaker before accepting the resignation of MLAs. There should not be any abuse of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and steps must be taken to prevent manufactured by-elections,” the People’s Watch had demanded in a press statement from Madurai.
