A press meet was conducted in Meenakshi Mission Hospital in Madurai today where Dr.P.L.Alagammai, senior consultant-medical gastroenterology and Dr.N.Mohan, senior consultant and HOD-Surgical Gastroenterology- had explained to reporters about how the prevalence and incidence of IBD is increasing to damage good health of intestine condition and how more young people are getting affected because of bowel disease that was diagnosed in late stage.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?:
The symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease are persistent diarrhoea, abdominal pain, blood in stools, blood daily in your motion, weight loss, appetite loss, fatigue, fever and recurrent intestinal complaints with digestive problems.
“IBD is a life-long issue like diabetes. There is no single exact reason still on why bowel disease occurs, but the number of patients in increasing gradually due to chronic intestinal disorders. Late diagnosis will lead to severe problems and we want to create public awareness about Inflammatory Bowel Disease that affects your digestive track if it is not diagnosed early. In our hospital, we are currently treating 125 patients most of whom are young adults,” Dr.N.Mohan, senior consultant and HOD, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Meenakshi Mission Hospital in Madurai, told reporters at the press meet here in Madurai today.
Dr.P.L.Alagammai, medical gastroenterology senior consultant, has said that IBD is a life-long disorder like diabetes and what is worrying is the increasing number of IBD patients in India every year.
“There is no single reason that we can say. But we can say that IBD is no longer a rare thing in India. The number of people living with IBD in India had nearly doubled from 0.13 million in 1990 to about 0.27 million in 2019. It is estimated from medical records that there are around 20 cases per one lakh population in India right now. The real burden is actually rising rapidly more in urban population where diet pattern and lifestyle are changing. Intestinal inflammation is rising due to refined carbohydrates, processed foods, unhealthy fats and low fibre foods being taken by youth especially in urban areas. So, we suggest that ‘PALAYA SORU’ (fermented leftover rice put in water overnight) which is very popular in south India) is the best medicine for controlling and treating bowel disease patients,” Dr.P.L.Alagammai told mediapersons at press meet in Madurai today- May 23rd 2026.
