MADURAI: Former Member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and former Vice-Chancellor of the prestigious Anna University in Chennai Prof.E.Balagurusamy has today suggested a possible path to appoint Vice-Chancellors immediately for State universities in Tamil Nadu.
“This is an SOS for urgent appointment of VCs. There is a continuing stalemate in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors to many State universities in Tamil Nadu. So, I humbly urge both the Governor and CM to consider arriving at a temporary, pragmatic compromise without prejudice to the pending Court proceedings. One possible path forward could be the consensual use of the existing University Acts and established conventions to appoint university VCs on an interim or regular basis, by stating that it is subject to the final outcome of judicial review,” Prof.E Balagurusamy had urged today in his urgent email message to the State government and Governor of Tamil Nadu on February 6th 2026.
The former Vice-Chancellor had stated in his letter that both the Governor’s office called Lok Bhavan and the State government have taken principled positions based on their respective interpretations of Constitional statutory authority, and these matters are pending in the court now.
“The prolonged absence of regular VCs is impairing our universities in TN. At present, several universities are operating without fulltime VCs. It is now a situation of administrative paralysis, delayed academic decisions, stalled faculty recruitment and promotions. Academic morale is missing in varsities and so I request the TN Governor and TN Chief Minister that universities cannot remain hostages of unresolved standoff. So, in the interest of our Tamil Nadu students, I suggest a temporary compromise between the Governor and CM for VCs appointments quickly,” Prof.E.Balagurusamy has said in his appeal to the Tamil Nadu Governor and Chief Minister- February 6th 2026.
