MADURAI: For pursuing job-oriented and skill development courses via distance mode, the students’ destination in Madurai Region of Tamil Nadu continues to be distance education major Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
The IGNOU Madurai Regional Centre. situated at Sikkander Chavadi in Koodal Nagar here, caters to academic needs of 16 districts in Tamil Nadu covering south to western parts of the State. Dr.D.R.Sharma took over as new Regional Director from November 2019 in the place of Dr.S.Mohanan who had retired as RD after doing a good work as per vision and mandate of the university.
JULY 2019 SESSION GOOD STRENGTH:
“I want to consolidate and expand the number of study centres after a thorough review….There are 18 active study centres now….After I took charge on 29th October 2019, my focus has been on our students’ learning facilities,” Dr.D.R.Sharma, Regional Director, IGNOU Madurai Regional Centre, told ‘Lotustimes’ website on November 11th 2019.
IGNOU is doing very good in Madurai Region…..The July 2019 session had 3,500 students’ enrolment and the varsity sees it as a satisfied strength. Since this varsity has national jurisdiction and is technologically strong in distance learning methods, the enrolment continues to be encouraging.
DEMAND FOR IGNOU COURSES:
The recently retired Dr.S.Mohanan has said that the university has been involved in social outreach through its activities in adopted Alanganallur and Koilpappakudi villages in Madurai district.
“In Madurai, I was the Regional Director of IGNOU for six years…..earlier, I was RD in Vijayawada for two years, then in Chennai for two years. … IGNOU is doing well in rural areas for people’s skill development,” said Dr.S.Mohanan today.
Stating that the new Regional Director Dr.D.R.Sharma will take forward the university’s mission, he added that the IGNOU courses which are very popular include food and nutrition development, B.Com (accounts and finance), disaster management course, urban planning and development, etc.
