MADURAI: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) of Government of India has extended the due date for filing of Income Tax Returns from July 31st 2025 to September 15th 2025 in view of the extensive changes introduced in the notified ITRs.

“Considering the time required for system readiness and roll out of ITR utilities for assessment year 2025-26, the CBDT had decided to extend the due date for filing IT returns by the taxpayers. The due date is now extended to September 15th 2025 and a formal notification is being issued separately for this. The notified ITRs for assessment year 2025-26 have undergone structural and content revisions which are aimed at simplifying income tax compliance, enhancing transparency and enabling accurate reporting,” according to a press release issued by the Union Ministry of Finance today- May 27th 2025.

The changes made for income tax returns have necessitated additional time for system development, integration and testing of the corresponding utilities, the government press release said. Furthermore, the credits arising from TDS statements due for filling by May 31st 2025 are expected to begin reflecting in early June, thereby limiting the effective window for IT Returns filing in the absence of such extension of the date.

“This extension announced today is expected to mitigate the concerns raised by stakeholders and provide adequate time for compliance thereby ensuing the integrity and accuracy of the IT returns filing porcess,” the Finance Ministry press release added.
