MADURAI: Railway authorities in the Madurai Division of Southern Railway had strengthened their monitoring mechanism to ensure quality of drinking water in railway stations that are coming under the jurisdiction of Madurai Division.
Drinking water supplied at stations is being regularly tested for residual chlorine, bacteriological and chemical parameters as per prescribed standards for early detection of any variation because the Southern Railway is taking steps to ensure safe, clean and potable drinking water for passengers at railway stations, according to a railway press release here today-September 24th 2026.
WATER SAMPLES TESTED:
Residual chlorine testing was carried out on 230 drinking water samples in railway stations in Madurai Division during the period September 14th to September 20th 2026, of which 205 samples met the prescribed requirements, the press release has said and added that bacteriological testing of 39 samples was also done and of these 35 samples were satisfactory.
“Railways is taking remedial action promptly with corrective measures and we are checking the water distribution systems also. Chemical analysis of water is also being undertaken as per prescribed protocol. In case, if any parameter is found beyond permissible limit, steps are being taken to change the source of water because the safety of passengers is important,” the press release from Madurai Division has said.
The Southern Railway is taking swift action in line with the observations made in CAG report and as a part of that system, the Madurai Division has further strengthened its drinking water supervision mechanism in railway stations through regular testing, the press release added today-September 24th 2026.
