MADURAI: An important demand of university faculty was taken to the attention of Tamil Nadu State government by the Madurai Kamaraj University Faculty Association (MUFA) asking for immediate implementation of rotation of Heads of Departments in all schools in MKU here as per the Government Order and like what is being followed in other universities in the State.

MUFA team had given a representation to Mr.P.Ponniah IAS who is the convener of MKU Syndicate Committee and Commissioner of Collegiate Education of Government of Tamil Nadu urging to him to take steps based on their urgent appeal dated July 23rd 2026.

“MUFA demands immediate implementation of Tamil Nadu government order making rotation of HoDs mandatory and the varsity faculty is asking for 3-years tenure for the post of Head of Department. Soem professors are continuing as HoD for as long as 15 years in our MKU and therefore opportunities are being denied to young professors,” the MUFA team had pointed out in its representation letter which was signed by MUFA president Dr.T.Arokiadoss, general secretary Dr.C.Muniyandi and treasurer Dr.V.Shanmugaiah.

IMPLEMENTED IN OTHER UNIVERSITIES:

Citing Higher Education Department letter dated May 22nd 2025 and its letter to university Registrar on October 27th 2025, the MUFA representation had stated that other universities have already implemented the government order and they include Madras University, Bharathidasan University, Bharathiyar University and Manonmaniam Sundaranar University where HoD rotation is being implemented every three years.

“However, MKU is yet to adopt this progressive policy. Continuing the same persons as Heads of Departments for a long time has created stagnation, bias and lack of transparency in decision-making. It also becomes an opportunity for revenge in some cases. All professors are appointed on the same day and in the same year, but some professors are HoD for last 15 years. The present HoDs are not handing over the charge to their junior professors even when they take leave. This is a total violation of G.O. and hence MUFA is demanding immediate implementation of government order on rotation of HoDs in all departments of MKU in Madurai for fairness, transparency, non-discrimination and to give opportunities to for all qualified faculty. Please stop monopoly of power in MKU campus in academic interests,” the MUFA had demanded on behalf of university faculty when Mr.P.Ponniah IAS was in the city to hold the academic council meeting of MKU as conveners committee chairman.
