AT SACRED GROVE IN IDAIYAPATTI NEAR MADURAI CITY FOR BIODIVERSITY ON MAY 24th 2026.
MADURAI: For those who want to enjoy nature in its full bloom, the right spot is just a short drive away from Madurai city. Yes. The place is Idaiyapatti where it will be a ‘flowering’ experience thanks to the endless groves of Kadambam trees, sweet fragrance and bliss which one should not miss.
A special event called ‘Fragrant Flower Trail’ was organized on May 24th 2026 by Best of Tamil Nadu (BOT) which is an important forum of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry here that is steering various tourism promotion initiatives.
FOR BIODIVERSITY HERITAGE STATUS:
“Idaiyapatti Sacred Grove near Madurai city must be given Biodiversity Heritage Status for its ecological, cultural and historical importance. So, we from the BOT in Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry took a dedicated step by holding a biodiversity walk in the name ‘Fragrant Flower Trail’ at historic Idaiyapatti Vellimalai Sacred Grove which is very near to our Madurai city. Conserving Idaiyapatti is not not just about saving our great ancient ‘Kadambam’ trees, but it is about protecting the soul itself of ancient Madurai,” Mr.J.Vijaya Darshan, chairman, BOT-TN Chamber, has said while expressing his strong commitment for protecting Idaiyapatti sacred grove in Madurai on May 24th 2026.
STOP ENCROACHMENTS, SAVE KADAMBA TREES:
This was historically spread across 3,500 acres but it is very sad that the sacred grove which is known for the famous ‘Kadambam’ tree is now reduced to 1,500 acres due to encroachments and habitat degradation which urgently calls for ecological conservation and legal protection from the Government of Tamil Nadu and Madurai Corporation authorities in association with the local bodies staff.
The fragrant flower walk trail biodiversity walk was conducted on May 24th 2026 in observance of the International Day of Biological Diversity with the support of Forest Department of Government of Tamil Nadu and all conservation supporters including the District Forest Officer, environment protection supporters and general public had participated in this biodiversity trail.
“This is the time of our legendary ‘Kadamba’ trees that will bloom this season….they give our ecological richness and this is a surviving landscape of our Madurai’s ancient ‘Kadambavanam’ heritage. We must conserve our sacred groves, the flora and fauna…and we must save our ‘Kadambam’ trees for our future generations,” Mr.Vijaya Darshan J, chairman, BoT-Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, had made a passionate appeal from Madurai on May 24th 2026.
“BoT is committed for getting biodiversity heritage status to our Idaiyapatti Vellimalai Sacred Grove near Madurai. We must protect our legendary true ‘Kadamb’ tree (Mitragyna parvifolia)…. it is our cultural heritage in Madurai. So, Kadamba saplings were distributed to encourage native tree preservation and community-led ecological stewardship,” the BoT team had explained while urging the people of Madurai to join their conservation efforts and to celebrate nature in future.
