MADURAI: An important request made by the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry to make Madurai as second capital of Tamil Nadu is expected to garner more attention after the assembly elections results are declared on May 4th 2026.

This appeal which was directly made to top BJP leader and Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Mr.Piyush Goyal during his visit to Madurai on April 12th 2026 at the peak of election campaign had gone unnoticed in the heat of political issues.

Dr.N.Jegatheesan, president, TN Chamber of Commerce & Industry, had made an appeal to the Union Commerce and Industry Minister who had participated in an interaction meeting with trade and industry members which was organized by the chamber here.

“States like Karnataka and Maharashtra have second capital. We need a second capital for Tamil Nadu also because the distance from Kanyakumari to Chennai is almost 800 kms and people have to travel such a long distance. So, Madurai can be made as second capital of Tamil Nadu,” the TN Chamber president Dr.N.Jegatheesan has said after submitting a memorandum to Union Minister Mr.Piyush Goyal in Madurai on April 12th 2026.

In the memorandum, he urged the Union Minister to expedite various developmental projects for Madurai and southern districts and they include prioritizing tourism and heritage infrastructure development in Madurai, establishing Madurai as a tier-II hub for IT-ITES companies, leveraging the strengths of textile and integrated apparel cluster developed as PM MITRA textile park in Virudhunagar district, developing of agro and food processing units, mega food parks and to develop Madurai as a manufacturing base by strengthening MSMEs and to open up more opportunities through defence corridor in Madurai region besides Madurai Metro Rail project and NIPER in Madurai.

Mr.Piyush Goyal, who spoke elaborately in that interaction meeting where he lambasted the present DMK government in the State for poor law and order situation, has said that Madurai possesses a great potential for becoming global destination but that is not happening due to an utterly ineffective government in Tamil Nadu right now.
