
MADURAI: An international conference which was organized by The American College in Madurai recently had focused on how sustainble food systems and food economics are important for emerging economies in the present global context.
The Postgraduate & Research Department of Economics and Department of Food Science and Nutrition of American College here had conducted international conference on 9th and 10th February 2026 on the topic “Emerging Food Economies: The Intersection of Home, Health and Happiness’ in association with the Department of Home Science of Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women in Madurai.
“This conference is highly pertinent today globally where food systems extend beyond nutrition and they are linked to economic development, public health, sustainability, household well-being and overall human happiness. Reducing food wastage, women’s health, innovations in food science etc were deliberated. The main outcome is that collaborative initiatives are needed in the domains of food economics,” according to a press release received from the organisers with emphasis on Home, Health and Happiness.
Dr.K.S.Pushpa, senior professor from Gandhigram Rural Institute, had inaugurated the international conference while Dr.Paul Jayakar, Principal and Secretary of The American College in Madurai, had released the conference souvenir.
Senior faculty member Dr.G.Kannabiran of American College and Dr.S.Vanathi, Principal of Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women were among those who addressed the delegates along with Dr.N.Panchanathan, Vice-Chancellor, Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed to be University) at Gandhigram. The conference received good response and participation with 191 research papers and 15 poster presentations, the press release added.
