MADURAI: The Emergency Department of Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) in Madurai has today released a few startling findings about road accidents that took place in Madurai and surrounding areas in the year 2025.

A comprehensive analysis of road accident cases that were treated in this hospital last year has given an alert message that using of mobile phone while driving was a leading cause of road accidents and most of the victims were young men who became victims of road mishaps.

Dr.B.Kannan, Medical Administrator, MMHRC-Madurai and Dr.Narendra Nath Jena, Director and Head-Emergency Medicine, told reporters here today at a press meet that using of mobile phone while driving is leading to mortality and morbidity of young people in the age group of 18 to 45 years when they met accident on road.

“The findings of Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre in Madurai are drawn from data analysis of 1,525 road accident cases that were treated in our hospital. The treated patients and victims are from Madurai and neighbouring districts between January and December 2025. We found that mobile phone usage is the key reason for road accidents, and the other causes are overspeeding and drunk driving,” Dr.Narendra Nath Jena told mediapersons at the press meet organised by MMHRC here on January 20th 2026.

This data study was released to the media to mark the National Road Safety Awareness Week observed from January 11th to 17th 2026 as per the directive of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of Government of India.

“Bone can be fitted, but head cannot be fixed when a road accident happens. So, it is important to follow traffic rules on roads, be it helmet or avoiding of rash driving. Wearing of helmets while driving two-wheelers and seat belts in cars is a must. Refrain from mobile phone use while driving. India records 4.7 lakh road accidents every year and there are 1.7 lakh fatalities. Road safety must be a daily practise. Helmets are not for traffic police. The theme this year is road safety is life safety… When rushed in time in the golden hour after accident, our hospital has all the facilities to handle emergencies. But, our appeal is that Road Safety Awareness Week must be a reminder for responsible road behaviour especially for two-wheeler riders who are facing accidents due to mobile use while driving,” Dr.B.Kannan and Dr.Narendra Nath Jena have appealed to the public at press meet held in MMHRC in Madurai today.

For road accident cases treated at MMHRC in Madurai daily, the doctors are giving orthopaedics, neurosurgery and plastic surgery while there are alarming cases of serious injuries to bones, head and soft tissues, the hospital’s road accidents’ anaylsis data has said.
