MADURAI: The Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Madurai had issued 1,77,603 e-passports in the year 2025 just within a few months after it was rolled out in May last year.

Totally 2,97,689 passport applications were received and processed in 2025 while 2.75 lakh passports have been issued already thereby indicating the swiftness with which the RPO in Madurai is working to make passport process an easy affair if the required documents are correctly submitted by the applicant.

At a press meet held in Madurai today-January 6th 2026-the Regional Passport Officer Mr.B.Vasanthan gave full details about the last year’s performance report of Regional Passport Office in Madurai which caters to 10 districts under its jurisdiction.

“We received totally 2,97,689 passport applications in 2025 and this number was 8,086 more than the previous year. The Ministry of External Affairs had introduced e-passport last year and we started it here in the month of May. Totally 1,77,603 e-Passports were issued by Madurai RPO and this e-passport is a very good initiative because it comes with digital security, chip enabled and cannot be tampered,” the Regional Passport Officer told reporters in Madurai today.

He said that several steps have been taken to make things easy for getting the passport and one of them is the Mobile Van Passport Seva which is made available in remote places in all districts for people who want to apply for a passport.

“Through our Passport Seva Kendras and mobile van, we are reaching to a huge number of people. When the documents are clear and the applicant’s name is clear, the passport is being issued with in just couple of days after police verification is over. The Date of Birth proof and photo ID card proof are important for us. When you can get your passport by normal process application within just few days, why do you go for tatkal process. So, our message to the applicants is that they must submit proper date of birth proof and photo ID card proof from the list of accepted documents given in our passport website. That is enough and your passport will be at your doorstep within few days of processing your application,” the Regional Passport Officer Mr.B.Vasanthan had stressed at the pressmeet in Madurai today morning.

Passport adalat seva for grievance redressal, DigiLocker facility for students and passport camps in colleges are some of the focused activities that are being done through the Regional Passport Office which is situated at Race Course Road-Bharathi Ula Veethi- in Madurai.

Mr.S.Alagesan, Deputy Regional Passport Officer-Madurai, was present at the press meet here today when the mobile van passport seva schedule for the next three months at various places in the region was released.
