“We have requested the Union Agriculture Minister for his quick intervention in the issue of yellow peas to levy an import duty of 30 per cent for the import of this gram. At present, the market price is Rs.5,400 per quintal as against the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs.5,800 per quintal given by the government. The new crop of yellow peas gram is coming in March and we are expecting the market rate of yellow peas to go down further. So, the cnetral goverment must levy import duty for the import of this gram,” the Tamil Nadu Fooodgrains Merchants Association has appealed to the Union Minister in its memorandum.
Creating awareness among farmers about using of fertilizers and pesticides for the crops they are cultivating, forming a special committee comprising authorities of Spices Board, Agri and FSSAI departments, uniform guidelines for agricultural produce and marketing and providing land for APMC Yards to those who are in food sector business in the country are some of the important issues highlighted in the memorandum which was submitted to Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Mr.Shivraj Singh Chouhan at Erode on January 5th 2026.
