How to control Dengue fever mosquitoes in your area?: Ex-ICMR scientist from Madurai shows practical demo in a village for public awareness

MADURAI: At a time when several districts in Tamil Nadu are facing Dengue fever cases right now ahead of mosson arrival, a former senior-level scientist at Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) laboratory in Madurai Dr.T.Mariappan who had decades of experience in Vector Control Research Centre here had given awareness cum demo in a village near Madurai on how Dengue can be prevented.

“As an expert in controlling mosquito-borne diseases, I had focused on pelople participation in preventing dengue fever. The mosquitoes that are causing dengue are called AEDES Aegypti….We must focus on reducing the mosquito breeding sources and rain stagnated water in our living places in villages, towns and cities. This awareness program was conducted for the villagers and students at Poondi village in Velliyankundram panchayat in Madurai district at a rural camp called ‘VIYUGAM’ which was conducted by the Madurai Institute of Social Sciences on October 15th 2025,” Dr.T.Mariappan, former scientist F, ICMR-VCRC in Madurai, has said today in his public awareness message.

He spoke to the men and women besides children in this village on how to control mosquito larva breeeding sources by removing unused tyres etc in their locality and this session was helpful for the first year PG students of MISS also, a press statement from the scientist has informed.

Dr.Mariappn had given practical training to MISS students in Madurai in the collection of Aedies aegypti larvae and about the reduction measures by eliminating the mosquito breeding sources, and this awareness session was held from 5pm to 8pm on October 15th 2025 which was celebrated as borth anniversary of former President of India Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, the press statement added.
