MADURAI: The cardiology team of doctors at Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital in Madurai had successfully done structural heart interventions by performing life-saving valve repairs for three heart patients recently.

Among these three cases, what stands out a milestone for the hospital is the guiding of a ‘Made in India valve clip-MyClip) for a 41-year-old man who was suffering with coronary artery disease through an advanced procedure called Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) for which a mitral valve clip manufactured in India was used to stop leakage of blood in the heart chamber.

At a press meet here today- June 17th 2025, the hospital’s team from Department of Cardiology had explained the significance of these three structural heart interventions were done with minimally invasive procedures.

The team includes Dr.R.Sivakumar, Head of Department of Cardiology and Director of Structural Interventions, Dr.S.Selvamani, Director of Interventional Cardiology, Dr.N.Ganesan, Director of Academics, Dr.M.Sampath Kumar. Lead in Congenital Interventions, Dr.Jeyapandiyan, Lead in Electrophysiology, Dr.S.Kumar, Chief Cardiac Anaesthetist and others.

“Earlier, we used to important the valve. But, now we have our own country’s MyClip valve and we used that for the patient whose four heart chambers were enlarged and there was backward flow of blood, thereby causing recurrent episodes of heart failure. Our team performed TEER for closure and stop the blood leakage. We did this for two patients just a couple of days back successfully and the 41-years-old patient made a strong clinical recovery,” Dr.S.Selvamani and Dr.R.Sivakumar told media persons at the press meet here today afternoon.

Dr.Ganesan and the cardiac experts in the team have said that the expertise of Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital in Madurai has advanced to such a level that it was able to do high risk life-saving valve repairs through Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) for 70-year-old male patient, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) non-surgical method for a 68-year-old male patient and Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) for a 41-years-old male patient by using MyClip manufactured in India.

“These procedures are done only in a very few hospitals in south Tamil Nadu and we have a strong multidisciplinary team in our hospital. The three procedures will be done for high risk patients who could not undergo traditional heart surgery,” Dr.R.Sivakumar and Dr.S.Selvamani told reporters.
