MADURAI: Marking a significant milestone in advanced medical care in southern districts of Tamil Nadu, an expert team of doctors at Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital in Madurai had successfully treated two women patients who were suffering severe unbearable headache and had multiple complex brain aneurysms.
Through a single endovascular session using cutting edge neurovascular technology and coiling method, the medical team had operated the two middle-aged woman patients in February and they are recovering well now.
At a press conference held in Madurai today-May 16th 2025, the details of this advanced approach to treat brain aneurysms at the hospital’s biplane cath lab were explained by the doctors and they include Dr.Gowtham Kuncha, consultant and interventional neurosurgeon, Dr.K.Senthilkumar, senior consultant, Department of Neurosurgery, Dr.K.Selva Muthukumaran, senior consultant and Head of Department of Neurosurgery, Dr.Mukuntharajan, senior consultant and Head of Department of Interventional Radiology and Dr.Rajesh Vetrivel, consultant, Department of Anaesthesiology.
“If there is unbearable severe headache, we advise the persons to consult doctors. A CT scan can be done to rule out brain aneurysm (balloon like dilation). Otherwise it will lead to life-threatening rupture in the brain which is a very sensitive part in our body. For these two women patients, we used minimally invasive endovascular coiling by using small catheters that are inserted into the brain vessels,” Dr.Gowtham Kuncha (he performed the procedure) and Dr.K.Senthilkumar said at the press meet here today.
Dr.Mukuntharajan has cautioned that severe headache associated with neck pain is a signal to consult the doctor to find out the reasons for unbearable headache while Dr.Senthilkumar has said that aneurysm is a time bomb in the brain and hence it should not be neglected.
