MADURAI: Students of Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College at Pasumalai in Madurai city actively took part in the 14th World Plastic Bag Free Day campaign organized here today- on July 7th 2023- on behalf of 7th Tamil Nadu Battalion National Cadet Corps (NCC) by involving students of five colleges.
The plastic-free event was conducted at Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College in Pasumalai in Madurai here today in which 164 NCC students from various colleges took part in this cleanliness drive in that area, that was meant to collect plastic bags scattered on the road and to create ‘No Plastic’ public awareness to reduce pollution and protect the environment.
“Plastic bags can take up to 500 years to decompose, and they end up blocking our waterways etc. It is time to use yellow cloth bag (manjappai),” a message was given to students and public at the 14th World Plastic Bag Free Day, observed in Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College today.
The participating students in today’s anti-plastic drive had destroyed plastic bags near the water bodies of Thiruparankundram water reservoir and surrounding areas. According to a press release received here today evening, 96 NCC cadets from Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College, 19 students from Madura College, 12 students from Sourashtra College, 28 students from Tamil Nadu Polytechnic College and nine students from Thirumangalam P.K.N.College, had participated in this programme.
Dr.A.Ramasubbiah, Principal of MTN College, had flagged off the no plastic awareness drive which was organized by Dr.S.Rajagopal, NCC Ofifcer of Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College and coordinated by NCC officers of other colleges-Dr.Srinivasan, Dr.Karthikeyan, Dr.Gnanaprakasam and Dr.Manikandan.
The World Plastic Bag Free Day is observed every year on 3rd July since the year 2010. Today’s event was held as per guidance of Col.V.Sivakumar, commanding officer of 7th Tamil Nadu Battalion- Madurai, the press release added.
