World Wetlands Day thrills students in Madurai, takes them to watch and count birds

MADURAI: The American College and Sri Aurobindo Mira College of Education in Madurai have organised a special focus for students on 2nd February 2022 to mark World Wetlands Day.

Er.M.C.Abilash, Director, Sri Aurobindo Mira College of Education, was the chief guest. He along with Mr.M.Rajesh, convener of Green Club, American College, elaborated to the students about the importance of wetlands. “Wetlands are like kidneys of humanbeings. So, we have to safeguard the wetlands which are present in our area,” they told the students.

A message was given to the students that wetlands are rapidly decreasing because of encroachments and garbage dumping by the public and “if we cant protect wetlands, we will not have much fresh water.” Wetlands are also homeland to many local birds and migratory birds.

A press release received here today informed that more than 25 birds were documented by the students. The birds were River tern, Egret, Grebe, Palm swift, Yellow wattled lapwing, bee eater, black ibis, Kingfisher, spot billed duck, and Indian Roller etc. More than 30 students participated in the bird watch and bird count.

Ms.A.Ajumunisha, coordinator, Dr.Sivabalan, Ms.Suganya Mary and Mr.Shereen Thomas have coordinated the event. Mr.M.Rajesh, Assistant Professor, Postgraduate and Research Department of Zoology, American College and president of Tamil Nadu Science Forum- Madurai, had informed that the Green Club of The American College organised wetlands bird watch and bird count in Samanatham Tank and Vaigai River neat the LIC building in Madurai. Mr.Kishore and Mr.Isaac of Department of Zoology, had documented 63 species of birds in Samanatham Tank of which 10 are migratory birds including Fulvous whistling duck, northern shovler, barn wallow, Garagney, common sandpiper and blue tailed bee eater.

More than 15 species were spotted near the LIC building in Madurai, the press release added.
