MADURAI: There is a growing demand from academic fraternity and university teachers’ associations in Tamil Nadu that the interviews to be conducted on 28th July 2020 for 12 candidates called for University of Madras Vice-Chancellor interview should be audio-video recorded by the government authorities.

This demand is doing rounds from today- on 25th July 2020- since academicians are expecting total honesty, integrity, transparency, qualification experience- eligibility in the final selection of VC for the prestigious University of Madras. The three-member VC Search Committee had called 12 candidates for interviews on 28th July 2020 out of the total 177 candidates who had applied for the Madras University VC post.

“The interview process and actual interview of these 12 candidates / VC aspirants should be recorded by concerned authorities. Search Committee members should take this step immediately because video recording of interviews will bring some transparency in VC selection process,” Dr.R.Murali, State Convener, Save Higher Education Movement-Tamil Nadu, told ‘Lotus Times’ news website here on 25th July 2020. (The VC Search Committee will recommend three names to the Governor-Chancellor from these 12 candidates after interview).

Stating that the demand is in genuine interest to protect University of Madras and higher education by preventing it from political and money power, he said that accountability is essential because a VC selection issue is in public domain and it for the public at large. “The performance is each candidate in that interview will be known to people.”

“When the list of 177 candidates who had applied for VC position of University of Madras is in website, why not the names of 12 candidates and their interviews by Search Committee in public domain? We want the 28th July interviews to be video recorded with all clarity and upload them to the website if possible.” Prof.R.Murali has demanded and he also said that the video file should be given to those academic-higher education associations who are asking for interviews video recording file copy of 12 candidates- University of Madras.

While the demand for recording is gaining momentum, it was learnt that higher education experts too are requesting the Governor-Chancellor to recommend full recording of 12 interviews on 28th July 2020.
