MADURAI: One person was taken in to custody arrested by Nagamalai Pudukottai police in Madurai last evening (9th May 2020) for instigating and attempting to mobilize people by spreading wrong information against quarantine facility created inside the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) here. He was released after a thorough grilling by police.

The district administration and health authorities have taken steps to set up a 400-bed quarantine camp in MKU campus in Madurai only to put those people coming from outside, other States and other countries under 14-day quarantine as a precautionary preventive measure. It is not for Corona patients or a Corona isolation camp.

However, one person Jayakumar of Vadapalanji village near the university had spread false information among the local villagers that Corona positive patients are being put under isolation in MKU quarantine facility.
Based on a complaint lodged by Vadapalanji village executive officer, the Nagamalai Pudukottai station police had arrested Jayakumar last evening and he was let off only after he informed police that he received information that it is for Corona positive patients. The arrested person had expressed regret.

Police said that Jayakumar tried to stage a demonstration before the Madurai Kamaraj University main gate today by instigating and bringing villagers for the protest. However, police took swift measures by taking Jayakumar in to custody yesterday evening itself.

The MKU authorities made it clear that the men’s hostels and a few guest houses in the varsity campus will be used only for putting people under quarantine and it is not a corona patients’ camp.

“Those returning to Madurai from other States, other countries will be quarantined. That’s all. It is a good preventive step by district authorities,” MKU officials have clarified.
