MADURAI: Former Member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and a distinguished academician Prof.E.Balagurusamy has today appealed to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to reconsider his decision to increase upper age limit by 5 years for recruitment to government jobs in the State because it will lead to very serious consequences in coming days.

“The purpose of government recruitment should not merely be to accommodate job aspirants. It should be to build a young competent future-ready administrative workforce for our State. Compassion towards candidates affected by recruitment delays is justified, but it should not come at the cost of today’s younger generation and long-term efficiency of government administration efficiency in Tamil Nadu,” he said in a letter to TN Chief Minister on November 1st 2026, a copy of which was sent to the media with analytical reasons.

Stressing the point that government must recruit only young tech-competent officers for public service, he said that by recruiting officers in Group 1 services at an advanced age may reduce the young officers contribution in administration and it will impact employment opportunities for educated youth who have qualification as per today’s trends.

NO JUSTIFICATION NOW:

“Recruitment delays during the previous government period should not become a justification for permanent policy changes now. Administrative delays by past governments should be addressed by ensuring timely recruitment job calendar and appointments for government jobs from now on rather than increasing the upper age limit. I request the Chief Minister to reconsider the recent 5-year enhancement of upper age limit and take a total review before making changes in Govt recruitment policy for all TNPSC jobs from Group 1 to Group IV exams,” Prof.E.Balagurusamy has appealed to the TN Chief Minister in his letter with detailed analysis.

Emphasizing that age alone is not a measure of competence for government jobs, he said that recruitment policies must encourage the entry of candidates who have recently acquired contemporary academic knowledge and who can respond to tech-governance challenges.

“We need future-ready officers for Tamil Nadu administration. So, I appeal to CM Vijay to take a balanced policy decision that protects legitimate interests of the already affected candidates without compromising the employment aspirations of today’s passing out candidates. The future of TN administration depends not simply on how many people we recruit, but on whom we recruit and what competencies they bring for government administration,” the former UPSC Member has said in his appeal letter that highlighted the expectations by people from the government officers presently.
