MADURAI: Today-August 30- is being observed as ‘World Millets Day’ by following a decision taken by the recently formed World Millets Federation (WMF) to observe this day for a global movement for creating an occasion for millet education and a larger public awareness in continuation of the momentum that was created by the International Year of Millets 2023.
“WMF is a global federation of millet leaders that works as an international platform for members of millet ecosystem from across the world. Our federation aims to connect the expertise of scientists, researchers, university professors, nutrition and health professionals, agriculture experts, millet manufacturers and entrepreneurs. We are planning for a stronger collaboration in sustainable agriculture, health, nutrition innovation, farmer development, community initiatives etc,” Mr.Prasanna Srinivas Sarakadam, Founding Member, World Millets Federation and editor of Millets International Media Portal (www.millets.news), has said in a press release issued yesterday for public participation.
ENCOURAGE MILLET MEALS:
Stating that World Millets Day can become one common annual occasion globally, he said that WMF is encouraging its members and millet community in all countries to hold farmer programmes, provide millet meals, university seminars, nutrition awareness, school activities, media campaigns etc so that millet promotion becomes a field activity by moving from just proposal level to direct people’s participation.
“The scale of an activity is not important. We are focused on purpose and impact. August 30 should grow beyond a ceremonial observance, the day must become an annual point of action and accountability for our farmers, nutrition, innovation, sustainability, entrepreneurship, markets and public awareness. What we are doing today is a global call to civil society to actively take part in millet-focused action and strengthen our movement year after year,” Mr.Prasanna Srinivas Sarakadam has said in his press statement issued from the office of World Millets Federation which is situated at Vittal Rao Nagar in Madhapur in Hyderabad.
