MADURAI: The historic Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai had aroused patriotic fervour on the 80th Independence Day which was celebrated yesterday with people thronging the museum to salute the national flag which was hoisted in the museum where people paid tributes to the great sacrifices of freedom fighters.
While the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was garlanded and floral tributes were paid to him, what was special in the Independence Day celebration was the special prayer that was performed by Buddhist monks at the famous ‘Gandhi Asthi Peedam’ in Gandhi Museum premises in Madurai where the sacred ashes of Mahatma Gandhi is kept for the visitors to pay homage to the Father of the Nation.
Mr.K.R.Nanda Rao, secretary, Gandhi Memorial Museum-Madurai and its treasurer Mr.M.Senthilkumar have led the large group of people who turned up in the morning to pay their respects to freedom fighters by taking part in the hoisting of national flag.
Museum staff and Buddhist monks along with the members of Rotary Club of Madurai Jallikattu including prominent social worker Mr.Nellai Balu sang the famous bhajan lines ‘Raghupathi Raghava Rajaram…’ and observed a minute silence at the sacred Gandhi Asthi Peedam.
“When the world is facing war threat now, what reminds us is the significance of peaceful freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi to get freedom for India from British rule. Only peace and harmony can lead to development and definitely India will become a top developed economy by the year 2047. Be Indian, Buy Indian will continue to be our motivating mantra to achieve that goal,” advocate Mr.M.Senthilkumar and social worker Mr.Nellai Balu said after hoisting the tri-colour at Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai on August 15th 2026.
Dr.R.Devadoss, Principal, Institute of Gandhian Studies and Research and members of Rotary Club of Madurai Jallikattu were among those present.
