MADURAI: The recent first round of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 academic general counselling has shown some positive aspects in students’ preferences of branches this year while it also highlighted the challenges faced in online choice-filling process by students especially from rural areas which led to missed opportunities despite strong score in Plus Two board exams.
Leading career consultant and analyst Mr.Jayaprakash Gandhi from Tamil Nadu had today released his analysis report of first round TNEA academic counselling in order to help the students how to approach the second and third rounds of counselling with informed choice-filling and select the college properly to pursue their engineering dream.
“Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) continue to dominate student preference this year also. Several core branches like electrical EEE and mechanical engineering have seen high demand compared to previous years. The improved interest in these core engineering branches is an encouraging trend noticed in TNEA 2026 first round of general counselling,” Mr.JP Gandhi has said in his comprehensive analysis shared with Madurai-based ‘Lotus Times’ media today-August 3rd 2026.
COLLEGES, COURSES AND CHALLENGES:
He gave a complete data to indicate the engineering admission trends and one of his critical observation is that 294 engineering colleges in the State had only single digit seat allotment in the first round out of the total 422 engineering colleges that are participating in TNEA 2026.
While the total number of academic counselling seats is 1,81,436 and total number of colleges in 422, the seats filled after first round is 24,674 and there are 1,56,762 seats remaining, with two more rounds to go and further.
“I found that 146 engineering colleges had zero allotments in the first round. So the major observation is that several colleges failed to attract even a single allotment during the opening round of TNEA 2026 counselling and many institutions recorded only single digit admissions. Government institutions continue to dominate student preference while many rural colleges remain under preferred,” Mr.Jayaprakash Gandhi had pointed out in his first round analysis report of engineering college admissions counselling which is underway in Tamil Nadu now.
PERFORMANCE OF HIGH CUT-OFF STUDENTS:
The first round analysis says that among the 52 students who secured a perfect cut-off mark of 200/200, only 38 students received allotment and among 2,151 students who secured a cut-off of 195/200 and above, only 1,506 students received allotments.
Among the 6,627 students with a cut-off of 190/200 and above, 4,409 students secured seat allotment in the first round, and from the overall picture it is also clear that more than 2,200 students with a cut-off of 190/200 and above did not receive allotment in the first round.
“This indicates that high-scoring students with high cut-off have either opted for other professional courses such as medicine or they preferred admission in deemed universities or private institutions or chosen not to participate in TNEA first round counselling,” the analysis report said.
Stressing that many high score students from rural areas continue to face difficulties in understanding the online choice-filling process, the top career guidance consultant has said that institution reputation continues to influence decision-making by the students rather than branch selection.
COUNSELLING AWARENESS IS NEEDED:
“Better counselling awareness is needed now as the remaining second and third rounds of counselling takes place. Students should approach the upcoming rounds with careful planning, informed choice-filling and realistic expectations. Students with higher cut-off marks who have not received seat allotment will still have good chances in the remaining rounds,” he added.
Mr.Jayaprakash Gandhi had informed in the analysis report that 1,56,762 engineering seats are still available and the final analysis will throw more light on the overall trend after the second and third rounds of TNEA 2026 academic general counselling is over.
The number of engineering colleges filling more than 60 per cent of their seats in the first round is down to 23 this year as compared to 30 last year and colleges filling more than 40 per cent of seats is down to 32 this year compared to 43 last year. And, out of the total 294 colleges with single digit admission- six colleges are government institutions, according to the analysis report of Mr.JP Gandhi.
He also gave more details about branch wise trends, least preferred branches, colleges performance and most preferred engineering colleges by students- government, govt-aided and most preferred self-financing institutions in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Madurai regions based on the first round admission trend, and these details will be published in the second part of this analysis story which will be published later this evening- August 3rd 2026.
