MADURAI: A survey report prepared by the Madurai district unit of Tamil Nadu Science Forum (TNSF) based on its field study about environment and pollution levels had alerted the government authorities that emissions from a private company at Manthikulam panchayat on Natham Main Road in Madurai are not only polluting but also killing the health of humans, fishes and livestock in that area.
A delegation from TNSF-Madurai district had submitted a petition in the District Collectorate here today-May 18th 2026- urging the District Collector to take immediate action against that particular private company named Scientific Agricultural Laboratory (SAL) that is causing factory pollution which is casuing public health issues in an alarming manner and also killing acquatic life like fish.
The survey report had highlighted the impending dangers and this study team members comprise Prof.P.Rajamanickam, Dr.S.Krishnasamy and Dr.K.Kannan while the TNSF Madurai district team led by its president Dr.Antony Paul had released its survey report to the media here today after meeting authorities in the district collectorate on May 18th 2026.
PETITION TO DISTRICT COLLECTOR:
“A private company named Scientific Agricultural Laboratory (SAL) has been operating since the year 2012 on Natham Main Road-Manthikulam panchayat in Madurai district. When the complaint about pollution from this factory came to our notice at Tamil Nadu Science Forum, we conducted a public opinion survey on May 12th 2026 in four locations near the factory- at Manthikulam, Adi Dravida Colony, Usilampatti and Jayabharath Housing,” Dr.Antony Paul, district president of TNSF-Madurai, has said in the petition given for Madurai district collector’s quick intervention to save human lives, fish and animals.
The survey was done by TNSF based on a complaint made by Mr.Ashok of that area who submitted a petition to the District Environmental Engineer on December 23rd 2022 stating that emissions from this private company SAL are harmful to the environment and human life.
“He also submitted another petition on October 2nd 2023 to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, to Madurai District Collector and other officials, but there was no response. So, we from the TNSF Madurai district chapter conducted a public opinion survey and the results were given to the government authorities today,” the TNSF team has informed.
“People who are living in surrounding area of that company have complained about air pollution, foul odor, smoke emission, water and soil contamination, the damage done to agriculture lands in Manthikulam, death of fish and livestock, respiratory problems, asthma, fever and body aches etc. So, we urged the public health officials and collectorate teams to stop environmental pollution being caused in Manthikulam area,” the TNSF Madurai district president told media after giving their representation at Madurai District Collector’s office today.
The survey team of TNSF had appealed that the Madurai District Collector must immediately order the District Pollution Control Board to conduct a spot study on emissions and pollutants that are coming from that private company in Manthikulam.
“The government fact-finding team must include our Tamil Nadu Science Forum members also along with the complainant from that area Mr.Ashok. Findings of the study must be disclosed to public representatives, and we also want the Madurai District Collector to check and verify the license date of this particular private company which expired on 31-03-2026,” the TNSF demanded.
Science forum survey team also alerted today that it must be verified whether the company is operating with licenses for fertilizer manufacturing, wholesale license, insecticides/pesticides license, soil testing, accreditation license and NABL accreditation.
“The company website of SAL says that it functions as a research laboratory for soil testing, fertilizers, plant diseases, and for consultation besides manufacturing, trading and selling related products,” the petition submitted to Madurai district collector on May 18th 2026 has said by the TNSF team about the factory pollution by Scientific Agricultural Laboratory on Natham Main Road-Manthikulam panchayat in Madurai.
