MADURAI: An appeal has been made to the Election Commission of India to increase the cash carrying limit to Rs.2 lakhs during the model code of conduct period in Tamil Nadu which is going for assembly polls on April 23rd 2026.
The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association from Madurai has sent a request letter to Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu Ms.Archana Patnaik yesterday by stating that the present cash carrying limit of Rs.50,000 is very much on the lower side in the current context of expenses.
“The EC has announced the poll date as April 23rd 2026 and counting of votes is scheduled on May 4th 2026. Election code of conduct which came into effect already is posing some difficulties for traders, businessmen, industrialists and general public because the cash carrying limit of Rs.50,000 was fixed many years ago. We are of the opinion that the Election Commission should increase the cash carrying limit to Rs.2 lakhs with proper supporting documents because the purchase expenses for traders and also the public has increased now- be it for household items, jewels, domestic function needs or business requirements. So, the inflation level must be borne in mind and hence we request the EC to increase the cash limit to Rs.2 lakhs during this model code of conduct period,” Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has urged in its letter on March 16th 2026, which was signed by president S.V.S.S.Velshankar, honorary secretary S.Sai Subramaniam and honorary advisor S.P.Jeyapragasam.
