MADURAI: Senior ophthalmology doctors of ‘The Eye Foundation Eye Hospital’ super speciality eye hospital at Anna Nagar in Madurai city have today appealed to the people who are above the age of 40 years to go for eye checkup to rule out Glaucoma in their eyes because ‘eye pressure’ will affect one’s eye sight if he or she is having high blood pressure and diabetes.

The eye care experts of ‘The Eye Foundation Eye Hospital’ at Anna Nagar in Madurai (near Suguna Stores) told reporters at a press meet here on March 14th 2026 that ‘sugar’ diabetes, high BP and family history are the prime reasons of ‘Glaucoma’ and like cancer it must be treated early because it is one of the prime factors for gradual vision loss which is leading to irreversible blindness because “Glaucoma” “takes away your eye sight if it is ignored and glaucoma becomes a silent killer leading to the cause of irreversible blindness.

“Eye pressure is the main reason for Glaucoma in your eyes. It is a silent killer for your vision loss. There are now 8 million people in India who are affected by glaucoma, and the prevalence rate is increasing in our country. Those who are above 40 years of age must go for eye checkup because the worrying fact from Madurai is that only 50 per cent of our aged people are going for eye tests and our study says that diabetes is a main risk factor cause for glaucoma in your eyes. If glaucoma comes, your eye sight is in danger,” Dr.S.Visalakshi, Medical Superintendent, The Eye Foundation super speciality hospital at Anna Nagar in Madurai told reporters along with hospital general manager Mr.A.N.Loganathan at the press meet here on March 14th 2026.

Dr.Visalakshi and Mr.Loganathan told reporters that World Glaucoma Day awareness is observed in the second week of March every year and The Eye Foundation Eye Hospital in Madurai had organized a rally in the city on March 14th 2026.

“World Glaucoma Association is observing glaucoma week to raise public awareness about early eye checkup. Glaucoma has various treatment options with latest advanced techniques. From our eye screening checkup camps, we found that the prevalence of ‘Glaucoma’ disorder in eyes is rising rapidly and those who are above 40 years of age are at risk right now. Those having diabetes and BP must go for a normal eye checkup once in a year because BP is also one of the reasons for eye pressure…and our aim is to prevent vision loss,” ophthalmologist Dr.S.Visalakshi (Madurai Cluster Head) has said in her appeal message from Madurai today-March 14th 2026- for the Glaucoma Week being observed across India from March 8th to 14th to stress the importance of regular eye checkup.

The main risk factors for glaucoma that kills your eyesight are diabetes, high myopia, family history of glaucoma, eye injury and those who are on long term steroid usage, the hospital press release has said in Madurai today.
