Court acquits MKU history dept faculty in woman harassment case; says there is “absolutely no evidence” to connect him

MADURAI: Dr.J.Shunmugaraja, Head and Assistant Professor in Department of Modern History, School of Historical Studies in Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) has been acquitted by the additional district and sessions court (PCR) Madurai in a harassment case filed against him in the year 2023.

On February 9th 2026, the III Additional District & Sessions Judge K.Dhamodharan had pronounced the order saying that the court has found absolutely no evidence on the charges against him and hence the accused MKU faculty is entitled for acquittal.

“The court took cognizance of the case against Shanmugaraja who is the accused. The findings of the court is that the accused Shanmugaraja is found not guilty for the offence charges made against him under various sections of Women Harassment Act and he is acquitted from the charges framed against him. There is absolutely no evidence in this case to prove the charges under section 294 (b) of IPC. The prosecution has also failed to establish that the accused had called a woman in her caste name in public view. The court has considered that prosecution has miserably failed to prove its case beyond all reasonable doubt and there is no evidence to connect the accused with this alleged crime,” the court has said on February 9th 2026 while disposing the case.

The MKU history faculty Dr.J.Shunmugaraja was implicated in a PCR case in March 2023 and the court judgment on February 9th 2026 has absolved him from the charges made against him in a case registered by Nagamalai Pudukottai police here under prohibition of harassment of woman act on charges that he made casteist remarks etc in the classroom.
