MADURAI: Women entrepreneurship motivator and Director of Madurai-based Green Fem Producers Company Limited Mrs.R.Elamathi had sent out a strong message that gender equality is not a women’s issue alone, but it is a shared responsibility of men, women, institutions and policymakers to build an inclusive society based on dignity and equality.
“Today’s girls must become economically independent. They should understand the challenges faced by women. I want to emphasize the prioritiziation of the United Nations which says that gender equality can be effectively achieved through women’s self-reliance. So, entrepreneurship and your business initiatives will help in that direction,” she stressed.
Mrs.R.Elamathi was speaking as chief guest at a one-day workshop organized by Mother Teresa Women’s University-Research and Extension Centre/ Madurai EDC cell in association with Voluntary Association for People’s Service (VAPS) and Green Fem Producers Company Limited on the topic ‘Achieving Gender Equality through financial independence – success journey of women entrepreneurs’ at Keelakuyilkudi in Madurai on January 29th 2026.
She urged women to become entrepreneurs by acquiring skills and emerge as thought leaders capable of solving social challenges.
Dr.M.Pushpa Rani, Director, Mother Teresa Women’s University-Kodaikanal, has said that financial independence is the backbone of gender equality, and when women earn the families progress, and when women are empowered, the society advances.
“Economic empowerment is not merely about income generation but about gaining choice, voice and control over one’s life. Women must move from dependence to self-reliance with dignity,” she added.
Dr.M.Subburajan, Team Leader, VAPS, had highlighted that women entrepreneurs today are firmly establishing themselves and emerging as leaders.
Dr.Valli Devasena, EDC coordinator, Mother Teresa Women’s University, welcomed the participants and more than 300 students had benefited from this workshop on women’s financial independence, according to a press release here yesterday.
