MADURAI: Dravidar Kazhagam president Mr.K.Veeramani has today lashed out at some influential groups that are mixing history and mythology for their own agenda and said it is a big challenge which is being confronted by people of India right now, especially on the Dravidian soil like Tamil Nadu.
“We must bear in mind that history is different from mythology. Unfortunately, all mythological stories are being converted into history and people are forced to believe it. Mythology is only an imagination whereas history is all about facts and reality,” he stressed at a conference on ‘Redeeming India’s History from Distortions’ held in Madurai today.
Dr.K.Veeramani was speaking at the inaugural session of a conference organized on January 21st 2026 by the PG & Research Department of History of Lady Doak College (LDC) in association with Dravidian Historical Research Centre in Chennai to commemorate the centenary of Self-Respect Movement (1925-2025).
Expressing concern that the Dravidian civilization is facing a big challenge right now due to history distortions by vested interests, he said that history is based on evidence and ancient records while subjects like astrology and mythology come with faith and imagination.
“Places like Keeladi will be the great spots in future to tell our ancient history based on archaeological excavations. If some groups want to tell lies in a scientific manner to distory and destroy our ancient Dravidian history, we msut be alert and fight for correct historical facts. Self-Respect Movement is not against anybody and it is only for humanism towards all,” Dravidar Kazhagam president Dr.K.Veeramani who is the Chancellor of Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology at Vallam in Thanjavur has said.
He quoted extensively from renowned historian Romila Thapar’s book ‘The Future in the Past’ to explain about how distortions are taking place in history.
Dr.M.Thenmozhi, associate professor of Department of Historical Studies at Queen Mary’s College-Chennai, had recalled the significant contributions made by Thanthai Periyar through the great self-respect movement and how it had helped for liberation of women, caste eradication, equality and rationalism.
Mr.Pon.Muthuramalingam, former Minister, Dr.R.Beulah Jeyashree, Principal and Secretary, Lady Doak College and Dr.S.Mercy Packiam, Head and Associate Professor of History-LDC, were among those who spoke on the importance of this conference and they emphasized that history is not just about dates and events alone.
