MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has today urged the BJP and AIADMK, which are two important political parties in the State, to make strong efforts for getting approval soon to the Madurai Metro Rail Project from the Central government before the ensuing 2026 State assembly elections.

“It is very shocking that the Central government has sent back the Metro Rail Project report to the Tamil Nadu State govenrment which had recommended metro rail for Madurai and Coimbatore cities in our State. Such actions will have a significant negative impact on the ruling BJP at the Centre and its alliance partner AIADMK in Tamil Nadu in the 2026 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, especially in the southern and western districts of Tamil Nadu,” Dr.N.Jegatheesan, president, Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, had cautioned in a press statement issued from Madurai today-November 19th 2025.

He had pointed out that even though the population of Madurai is less than 20 lakhs, a large number of people from the southern districts travel regularly to Madurai and from Madurai to various places in the city everyday.

“The Metro Rail Project for Madurai will be especaially beneficial for people who come to the High Court Madurai Bench here due to the proposed route… Moreover the AIIMS hospital is being opened in Madurai soon after the completion of construction works which are undergoing right now. The lack of coordination between Central and State governments has led either to the cancellation or undue delay for several infrastructure projects that are essential for southern Tamil Nadu. We appeal to the BJP and to the AIADMK to get the Madurai Metro Rail Project approval. Our appeal is on behalf of the industry, trade and business community of south Tamil Nadu,” Dr.N.Jegatheesan has said in his fervent appeal to the Modi government today for Madurai Metro Rail Project through a press statement issued from Madurai today.

The TN Chamber president had said that metro rail projects have been approved for several cities in northern States that have population of below 15 lakhs.

“Cities such as Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Noida, Nagpur, Pune, Faridabad, Gurugram, etc have bene given Metro Rail project. So, if the Metro Rail project has truly been denied for Madurai and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, then which other place in Tamil Nadu will qualify for metro rail project?….We are not yet clear whether the metro rail project has been rejected for Madurai or sent back by the Central govenrment to the State government for additional details. But, we want Madurai Metro Rail Project,” Dr.N.Jegatheesan has appealed in his press release from Madurai today.
