MADURAI: An appeal has been made to Union Finance Minister Ms.Nirmala Sitharaman to reduce the GST on claybricks to help the housing sector and also help those who want to construct a home by making the cost of claybricks cheaper.

“The Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi is giving lot of focus to housing for all scheme. So, we want the Centre and Union Finance Minister to levy GST at 5 per cent with Input Tax Credit, since clay brick is an important component for building a house,” the Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has appealed from Madurai yesterday-November 4th 2025.

This representation was made by association president S.V.S.S.Velshankar, secretary S.Sai Subramaniam and honorary advisor S.P.Jeyapragasam by stating that claybricks industry gives employment in a big way in rural areas.

“In the recent GST reforms announced by the Union Finance Minister, the rate of GST was reduced from 18 per cent to 5 per cent for granite and marbles. But, the clay bricks is levied at 12 per cent GST with ITC and 6 per cent GST wihtout ITC. We all know that granite and marbles plays a minimal role in house construction. So, our request is to reduce the GST on claybricks and make it 5 per cent with input tax credit for the benefit of encouraging house construction,” the association had pointed out.
