
MADURAI: Dr.G.Venkataswamy Oration Award 2025 was conferred on eye research pioneer Dr.Leon Ellwein who made significant contributions in vision health through his leadership roles in various renowned institutions including the National Eye Institute (NEI) here he served as an associate director for applications of vision research.
The award was presented to him in Madurai on September 30th 2025 by Dr.R.Kim, president of GOVEL Trust, in the presence of Dr.G.Natchiar, a senior founding member of Aravind Eye Hospital and Director Emeritus of Aravind Eye Care System.
“Dr.G.Venkataswamy Oration is organized annually to celebrate the legacy of the visionary founder of Aravind Eye Hospital who has made enduring contributions to the field of ophthalmology by pioneering a self-sustaining model of eye care delivery from Madurai with the aim of eliminating needless blindness. This model of Dr.GV has profoundly influenced access to affordable eye care for millions of people in India and across the developing world,” according to a press release received from Aravind Eye Care System yesterday.
VISION LOSS STUDIES:
The award recipient Dr.Leon Ellwein also played a key role as professor cum associate dean at University of Nebraska Medical Centre, and at NEI his research had focused on the epidemiology of cataracts and refractive errors. His studies revealed how vision loss increases risks such as falls, depression and dependency and the need for blindness prevention.
“Dr.Leon Ellwein had led studies in Asia and Africa besides fostering research collaborations in eye care between India and USA. He collaborated with Aravind Eye Hospital since the early 80s, and played a pivotal role in landmark study of Madurai Intraocular Lens Study which helped Aravind Eye Hospital’s capacity for population-based studies for research,” the press release added.
Dr.Ravindran, Chairman, Aravind Eye Care System, had recalled the contributions of Dr.G.Venkataswamy toe the world of eye care while Thulsiraj Ravilla, Director (Operations) and Dhivya Ramasamy, Executive Director, were among those who spoke.
