
MADURAI: The Southern Railway Madurai Division is going to implement the recent enhancements in train parcel services policy by offering parcel space in trains through short term leasing to traders, business community and logistics partners.
There is going to be e-auction on September 25th 2025 which will be conducted through IREPS portal by the Madurai Division of Southern Railway for parcel compartments and parcel vans in trains.
“Parcel services are being steadily improved in trains through technology-driven management. We are offering efficient and reliable services by offering parcel space through leasing. Under this policy, luggage compartments can now be leased for shorter duration ranging from 10 days to 90 days, offering greater ease and choice to our customers. Contract will be awarded through e-auction and it will be suitable for transporting seasonal commodities such as mangoes, amla, eggs and lemon,” according to a press release received from the Madurai Division of Southern Railway here today.
REVISED PARCEL POLICY IN TRAINS:
To facilitate leasing, the Southern Railway Madurai Division will conduct an e-auction for parcel compartments and parcel vans on September 25th 2025 through the IREPS portal.
The Madurai Division has successfully implemented Parcel Management System in 13 major stations including Madurai, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Rameswaram, Karaikudi, Bodinayakkanur, Manamadurai, Rajapalayam, Sengottai and Tiruchendhur.
“This system enables electronic weighing with automatic capture of luggage weight, computerized booking counters, a unique 10 digit progressive reference record number for each consignment, barcode enabled tracking and SMS updates to customers at every stage of parcel movement,” the railway press release said.
As per the previous policy, parcel compartments with a capacity of 3.9 tonnes are scheduled for e-auction in several express trains including Rameswaram-Ayodhya Cantonment Express, Rameswaram-Bhubaneswar Express, Tirunelveli-Bilaspur Express, Tirunelveli-Gandhidham Express, Tuticorin-Okha Express and Pandiyan Express.
In addition, the parcel vans with a higher capacity of 24 tonnes are available for leasing in the Tirunelveli-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Express in both directions.
“Loading and unloading of parcel luggage consignments will be permitted at railway stations where the trains will have a scheduled halt of at least five minutes. The e-auction for parcel compartments and parcel vans in Madurai Division of Southern Railway will be conducted on September 25th 2025 through the IREPS portal,” according to the railway press release here today.
The railway parcel service connects regional products of southern Tamil Nadu to different parts of the country and the key commodities include fish, sea shells and hatching eggs from Rameswaram, betal leaves-live and iced fish, household goods and amla from Tirunelveli, iced fish-household articles and two-wheelers from Tuticorin, rubber products-food products-amla and mango from Madurai, the railway press release has said today-September 23rd 2025.
In the previous parcel policy for railways, the leasing was given for a period of two years, and that is now revised for luggage compartments for shorter duration ranging from 90 days to three years (previously 2 years) to provide more opportunities for sustained business use. The contract will be awarded through e-auction.
