Railway revenue registers rapid growth in Madurai Division with Rs.452 crores in four months, DRM signals plans on track at Independence Day celebrations

MADURAI: The Madurai Division of Southern Railway is making rapid strides in revenue earnings and in the financial year 2025-26 (till the end of July 2025), the division got a total revenue of Rs.451.76 crores compared to Rs.414.05 crores in the corresponding period last year and this is an impressive growth of 9.1 per cent, Mr.Om Prakash Meena, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), has said in Madurai today- August 15th 2025- at the 79th Independence Day celebrations.

“The first and foremost is our finances. The Madurai Division got Rs.289.88 crores from passenger earnings, Rs.129.82 crores from freight, Rs.19.91 crores from other coaching and Rs.12.15 crores from sundries, with 16.63 million passengers transported during the period in this financial year till the end of July 2025,” he said in his speech after unveiling the national flag today.

STATION REDEVELOPMENT WORKS:

The DRM also informed that the railway station redevelopment works at Madurai and Rameswaram stations are progressing well and it is important because these two are important pilgrimage centres in the country.

“Redevelopment of Madurai Junction at a cost of Rs.347.47 crores will feature a new terminal building, a subway linking directly to the Periyar bus stand, FOBs for parcel movement and a multi-level parking facility. The west entry of railway station will also see significant upgradation,” Mr.Om Prakash Meena has added.

He also said that Tirunelveli railway station redevelopment project will be taken up at a cost of Rs.92.8 crores and works being taken up at 17 stations in Madurai Division under the Amrit Scheme to enhance amenities for train passengers.

Additional Divisional Railway Manager Mr.L.N.Rao, Chief Project Manager of Gati Sakthi Unit Mr.K.Harikumar and Divisional Personnel Officer Mr.T.Sankaran were among those present along with railway officials, employees, family members and general public.
