MADURAI: Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi has announced that the Metro Rail Service will be extended to more than 25 cities in India by the year 2025, while addressing at the inauguration of driverless train on Delhi Metros Magneta line on 28th December 2020.

In a press statement issued on 2nd January 2021, the TN Chamber president has said that Madurai, with a population of more than 25 lakhs, is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu and the city which is mostly affected by the traffic crisis after Chennai. “None of the measures taken so far to curb the traffic crisis in Madurai have been effective. The main reasons for this are increasing number of vehicle traffic day by day and the lack of adequate width of roads and the lack of necessary flyovers. The introduction of the Metro Rail project in Madurai will greatly help to overcome the traffic problem. With the announcement of the Metro Rail project in Coimbatore after Chennai, the non-announcement of the implementation of the project to Madurai is a great disappointment to the people in Southern Districts of Tamil Nadu,” the TN Chamber press statement has said yesterday.

The press release further stated that “It is noteworthy that Parliament has already approved an amendment to the law that would expand the “Metro Rail” project if state governments accept 50 percent of the
total cost and recommend the project for any city with a population of more than 10 lakhs.
