
MADURAI: The Madurai Division of Southern Railway has created history on March 25th 2026 in its freight handling records by crossing 3.5 million tonnes for the first time and also surpassed its freight loading target for the financial year 2025-26.
On March 25th 2026, the Madurai Division has touched 3.501 million tonnes and this is the first time the Madurai Division has crossed 3.5 million tonnes target in its history thanks to the relentless focus on increasing freight traffic by strengthening freight infrastructure operations, according to a railway press release here yesterday.
During the year 2025-26, the Madurai Division handled 1.7598 million tonnes of fertilizers by transporting them to various places in the country through its well equipped rake capacity, 0.7993 million tonnes of coal, 0.0434 million tonnes of foodgrains, 0.0862 million tonnes of cement and 0.0065 million tonnes of containers and 0.8629 million tonnes of other goods.
NEW MILESTONES IN LOADING:
The Madurai Division has informed that Don Peas were loaded for the first time from Milavittan in this division to Dankuni Junction in Howrah Division of Eastern Railway in five rakes totaling 9,717 tonnes while Musoor Dal was newly loaded from the same Milavittan to Azara in Rangiya Division of Northeast Frontier Railway and Manikpur Junction in Prayagraj Division of North Central Railway, the railway press release added.
In August last year, the Madurai Division also witnessed container loading to a new destination from Gangaikondan to Deshnoke in Bikaner Division of North Western Railway.
“Leading companies like SPIC and TAFE have made significant strides in their loading schedule during the year 2025-26. The Madurai Division maintains 16 goods sheds and six active private sidings for freight handling. The goods sheds of Southern Railway Madurai Division are located at Palani, Dindigul, Pudukottai, Chettinad, Manamadurai, Ramanathapuram, Aruppukottai, Virudhunagar, Rajapalayam, Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli, Ambasamudram, Milavittan, Vadipatti, Kudal Nagar and Theni,” the railway press release issued yesterday has said.
