On March 23rd 2026, the TNSF team in Madurai met the district collector and gave a representation to him urging his quick intervention to stop the violations of collector’s order at Sivarakottai lake sand quarry and protect the water sources based on investigation report submitted to the Madurai District Collector today with data and photos of violations taking place in Sivarakottai village near here.
A team of Tamil Nadu Science Forum in Madurai district led by team leader Prof.P.Rajamanickam along with members- Dr.S.Krishnaswamy, Mr.S.Dinakaran and Dr.N.Ezhil met the district collector at the collectorate here today morning seeking his quick intervention because excess digging is taking place than the permission given by the collector.
“There is a water tank at Sivarakottai village in Kallikudi taluk in Madurai district and this tank is known as ‘karisal lake’. Its area is 134 acres and it helps for agriculture in about 500 acres of land. It helps the farmers and also groundwater level. But there are violations of procedural order given by our Madurai District Collector on 9th January 2026 to extract soil from this water tank at Sivarakottai. The Tamil Nadu Science Forum has conducted an spot study investigation after local people’s protests that the permission granted to M/s CTR & Co for three months to excavate 10,000 cubic meters of soil from Sivarakottai lake is being violated and there is excess digging that is taking place there right now,” P.Rajamanickam and S.Krishnaswamy of TNSF Madurai district unit told reporters at the collectorate here today after submitting their data evidence to the collector on March 23rd 2026.
The TNSF team’s appeal to the Madurai District Collector had pointed out that Sivarakottai Ramalingam’s people appeal is that soil digging extraction rules were being violated there and a detailed investigation was done on the spot.
“The stipulated excavation soil digging depth is 3.3 ft, but there is evidence that the Sivarakottai water lake tank was excavated up to 30 ft. We gave the photos to our district collector today. The 10,000 cubic meters rule of our collector was violated. Soil digging is taking place till night even though the time is from 8 am to 5 pm. Groundwater level is in danger. Private parties are involved in this and we want the Collector to rectify the damages to our soil and restore water resources in Sivarakottai. We have alerted the mines department, geology experts and public interest voices to come and stop sand quarrying at Sivarakottai,” the Tamil Nadu Science Forum has said in its appeal to Madurai District Collector Mr.K.J.Praveen Kumar on March 23rd 2026.
