MADURAI: An important information which will generate huge public interest was shared today from the archives of history informing that the great Swami Vivekananda had stayed at Teppakulam in Madurai on 2nd February 1897 and that exact spot where he stayed is the present campus of Thiagarajar College at Teppakulam in the city.

“From the letters correspondence of Swami Vivekananda where it was mentioned about the place of stay in Madurai, it was clear from the records that he stayed in our present Thiagarajar College campus for one day on February 2nd 1897 before he continued his travel schedule to another place. The letter we have now says Mariamman Temple, it shows the boundaries of the place in Teppakulam that were mentioned during his stay. And, that place happens to be this campus where our Thiagarajar College is now situated in Madurai,” college Principal Dr.D.Pandiaraja has said with pride at the 77th College Day celebration held in Madurai today evening-March 18th 2026.

He thanked the Ramakrishna Math for giving the copies of Swami Vivekananda’s letters from the archives available with it.

Justice L.C.Victoria Gowri, Judge, High Court of Madras, who was the chief guest for the college day function, has said that it is a matter of pride that Swami Vivekananda had stayed for a day in this college campus in Madurai.

She stressed the importance of having a skilled workforce for India to emerge as a top country in the world in the coming years. “The role of students and youth is vital. Honesty should be the only trait of our human resource and the average age of India is only 29 which means that there is a huge potential for our country,” Justice Victoria Gowri has said in her speech while speaking about Swami Vivekananda, Jhansi Lakshmi Bai, Napoleon Bonaparte, Mahatma Gandhi, B.R.Ambedkar, Joan of Arc, Socrates, Albert Einstein and Fidel Castro for their inspiring contributions.

888 STUDENTS GOT PLACEMENTS LAST YEAR:

Thiagarajar College Principal Dr.D.Pandiaraja has presented the annual report for 2025-26 academic year and informed that top reputed companies are coming to the college for campus placement and there were 888 job placements last year and this year too the number is moving very fast.

“International research collaborations with 31 foreign universities, integrating AI into teaching and research, nearly 4,000 scholarships received by students from government and college management, digital evaluation of answerscripts, the newly constructed T.Kannan Block, sports achievements and a very impressive NIRF ranking (20th rank) at the national level are some of the latest highlights of Thiagarajar College,” the Principal has said in his comprehensive annual report.

Mr.K.Hari Thiagarajan, Secretary, Thiagarajar College has said in his welcome address that the college was inaugurated on 7-7-1949 and the management is upholding that legacy.

Dr.Mrs.Uma Kannan, college president, had presided over the 77th College Day function held in the college campus here today-March 18th 2026.

The college had presented gold medal and certificate to two best outgoing students Mr.Loga Hari of III B.Com and Ms.Dharshini of B.Sc Psychology third year, and also felicitated the staff who are retiring from service.
