Aravind Eye Hospital opens our eyes with success stories in rehabilitating persons with low vision

A visionary meet on low vision at Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai on February 14th 2026.

MADURAI: The world renowned Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai has today demonstrated several success stories in rehabilitation of persons with low vision, especially school going children, and how using of latest technology had empowered their lives from education to employment.

A special awareness session named as ‘Care Beyond Cure’ was organized in the hospital on February 14th 2026 to explain how low vision community is able to lead a normal life thanks to the transformative effect made possible through the vision intervention assistive technology services of Vision Rehabilitation Centre at Aravind Eye Care System in Madurai.

“This event is to create awareness about low vision services, rehabilitation support and assitive solutions that are available for those with visual impairment. At vision rehabilitation centre in our hospital, we have many success stories as examples. We facilitate assistive devices, gadgets, mobile phones etc for empowerment of children and adults with low vision. With community support and our expertise treatment, we could show to the world that low vision children can continue with their school or college education and succeed like others with self-esteem,” senior opthalmologist Dr.P.Vijayalakshmi has said at this eye-opener programme.

To susbtantiate the point that low vision rehabilitation is possible, a few videos were shown of school children telling how assistive technology and devices had helped them to continue their studies.

Dr.A.Senthil Kumar IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, who spoke via video conference mode, had lauded the transformative eyecare being provided by Aravind Eye Hospital to millions of people across India and outside.

Dr.R.Raja Govindasamy, former Rotary district governor and motivation expert, has said that Aravind Eye Hospital has an uniqueness in every aspect of eyecare and Rotary movement is closely associated with this great visionary hospital in Madurai.

Top opthalmology team of Aravind Eye Hospital led by Dr.G.Natchiar, Dr.R.D.Ravindran, Dr.N.Venkatesh Prajna, Dr.S.R.Krishnadas and Dr.R.Kim were among those present at the ‘Care Beyond Cure’ low vision community meet-up program today along with Mr.V.L.Narasimhan, senior board member of Vision Aid and they distributed Smart Vision Glasses (SVG-assistive devices) to 15 persons who have low vision but showed strong willpower to achieve with enthusiasm.

Dr.B.Sahithya of vision rehabilitation centre has said that a dedicated team has been carrying out special screening and outreach camps at various places to do functional vision assessment.
