
MADURAI: The Aravind Eye Bank of Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai has received important equipment worth Rs.35 lakhs with the funding support of Rotary Foundation.
Rotary Club of Madurai West in association with Rotary Club of Fresh Water Bay-Australia had donated the equipment with matching grant received from the Rotary Foundation.
“This equipment comprising specular microscopy, slit lamp machine and other accessories was commissioned at Aravind Eye Bank here yesterday- January 29th 2026- by Past Rotary International president and Trustees Chairman of The Rotary Foundation Mr.Holger Knaack in the presence of senior members of Rotary and Aravind Eye Hospital,” according to a press release received from the hospital yesterday.
Rotary International Director Mr.M.Muruganandam, Rotary Foundation Trustee Dr.Bharath Pandya, Rotary District Governor Mr.J.Karthick and past governor Dr.Zameer Pasha along with Rotary members including R.V.N.Kannan and Gowri Rajan were among those present when the equipment was commissioned at Aravind Eye Bank yesterday evening.
Dr.N.Venkatesh Prajna and Dr.Srinivasan of Aravind Eye Hospital have explained about the process of harvesting eyes and checking them for use of patients, and how the Aravind Eye Bank has been carrying out a significant work ever since it was founded in the year 1998 with Rotary grant, the press release added.
“The equipment will be used for evaluating the quality of the eyes that are harvested for transplant to a beneficiary person,” the doctors explained. Mr.Palaniappan, president, Rotary Club of Madurai West, welcomed the gathering while Past District Governor Dr.Raja Govindasamy spoke about Rotary’s association with Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai.
