MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association had requested the Union Finance Minister Mrs.Nirmala Sitharaman to make important announcements for Madurai airport in the union budget 2026-27.

A detailed memorandum was prepared and sent to the central government with various suggestions and appeals for Tamil Nadu people by giving clear points for different sectors like road infrastructure, civil aviation and Madurai airport expansion requirements, railway projects in southern districts, national highways, income tax etc.

“We request the PM and FM to take steps for starting daily once flight services from Madurai to Goa and from Goa to Madurai, and flight services from here to Kochi and to Thiruvananthapuram. We also appeal for flight services from Madurai to Delhi and from Delhi to Madurai in morning, noon and evening timings, and similarly to Mumbai also,” the association has requested in its suggestions list for aviation sector.

Mr.S.V.S.S.Velshankar, president, Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association, Mr.S.Sai Subramaniam, secretary and honorary advisor Mr.S.P.Jeyapragasam had prepared a detailed list of suggestions for the 2026-27 union budget.

They had urged the central government to allocate funds for Madurai airport runway expansion and execute it at the earliest.

“We also request the Union Finance Minister to include Madurai in the bilateral agreements with other countries for international connectivity and allow more foreign airlines to our airport in Madurai. Our association requests the Modi government to announce Madurai airport as a full international airport immediately. The night flight services from Madurai and to Madurai airport must be increased because there is only one flight now scheduled to Chennai from here during the night time even though the airport is announced to operate 24 hour flight services daily. We want the Madurai airport runway to be extended soon by allocating adequate funds in the coming union budget for 2026-27,” the association has urged in its representation to the central government on December 25th 2025.
