MADURAI: The project work done by an undergraduate student of Fatima College in Madurai had garnered wider attention and recognition at the international conference organized by Indian Chemical Society-Kolkata in collaboration with Department of Chemistry of Madras Christian College (MCC) in Chennai from December 18th to December 20th 2025.
Ms.Jerini Ronia of third year B.Sc. (chemistry) in Fatima College had presented her project work research paper which focused on preparation of eco-friendly absorbent prepared from ‘Desi Lemon Peels’ to remove toxic metal from aqeous solution.
She had orally presented her paper on December 19th 2025 and explained her findings about the study done under the guidance of Dr.B.Suganthana, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry at Fatima College and the work was published in the abstracts book brought out for the 62nd Annual Convention of Chemists and international conference on ‘Net Zero Goal and Sustainability: Role of Chemical Sciences in Green Energy, circular economy and prosperity of India’.
FROM PARAVAI MARKET IN MADURAI:
“Our student M.Jerini Ronia of III yr UG chemistry had participated online and presented her project work. The study focused on preparation of eco-friendly DLPA absorbent from ‘Dessi Lemon Peels’ which is a bio-material waste collected from our local Paravai market in Madurai district. She made a successful attempt for removal of Chromium (heavy metal) from aqueous solution by using the absorbent prepared using lemon peels. Her work was recognized as a socially relevant one in this international conference under the catgeory of green chemistry and she won the best oral presentation award in this prestigious chemical sciences confeence,” a delighted Dr.B.Suganthana has said yesterday while sharing her student’s success at the prestigious chemistry meet.
The title of her paper is ‘preparation and chracterization of an eco-friendly absorbent for the removal of heavy metal pollutant’ because Ms.Jerini Ronia was concerned that chromium plays a major role in polluting aquous environment among heavy metal pollutants.
“Though so many waste water treatment methods are available, the current study focused on preparing an eco-friendly DLPA absorbent from ‘Desi Lemon Peels’ and to determine the absorption potential of prepared absorbent. This study was aimed to assess the suitability of DLPA biomaterial for removing heavy metal chromium from acqueous solution. We are happy in our Fatima College that our student will be able to get student membership of the Indian Chemical Society due to the impact paper she had presented which is useful for stopping pollution and helps promoting green energy sources,” Dr.B.Suganthana had explained.
So, the message that is clear is that lemon is good not only for physical health but also for environment health through lemon peels.
