MADURAI: The prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Thoppur in Madurai will become a concrete reality very soon as construction works have been geared up for various segments of this massive project.

“First phase of building structures will ready by January 2026. As a first step, we will undertake phase-wise shifting of students from the present temporary campus situated at Government Medical College in Ramanathapuram. The buildings here are getting ready now and the required mandatory approvals from State government for these new buildings is expected soon. So, we are right now in the process of completing the first phase works for Madurai AIIMS,” Prof.Dr.M.Hanumantha Rao, Executive Director & CEO of AIIMS-Madurai, has informed.

Speaking to ‘Lotus Times’ news website here on November 16th 2025, he said that there are five batches of students and in each batch there are 50 students who are now studying in the temporary campus at Ramanathapuram with a total strength of 250 students.

“Since the buildings will be ready by January 2026, we want to start shifting of our students to the AIIMS campus in Madurai in a phased manner. There will be separate hostel blocks for boys and girls, and a dining hall, service zones etc. Construction works for these buildings are in final stages now and so we want to shift the students from February,” he added.

OUT-PATIENT SERVICES:

Prof.Dr.M.Hanumantha Rao has also shared another important information that limited OP services will commence from February 2026 to take care of outpatients at AIIMS in Madurai.

The progress of civil works and construction plans are being reviewed and monitored periodically to make AIIMS-Madurai as a top class healthcare destination for the people of southern districts.

“This is a huge project being implemented at a cost of Rs.2,000 crores. AIIMS Madurai will be totally ready and works get completed fully in April 2027. There will be all specialities here for medical treatment and all facilities for medical college students. The hospital building will be 11 floors…with 750 beds and an additional 150 beds for infectious diseases block. In the seocnd phase, we will take up building construction for AYUSH also with special focus on Siddha treatment,” the AIIMS Executive Director has said in Madurai.

Prof.Dr.M.Hanumantha Rao has said that Madurai AIIMS has 80 faculty right now and the total posts for faculty positions is 183.

“This is a 222-acres campus and from coming January we will have more activities here as we get ready for shifting the students from Ramnad to Madurai. By February, the G+6 building will be put to use and from there on, we will take the other works forward for AIIMS project in Madurai in second phase,” the AIIMS Madurai Director has informed.
